Scan the roof plane
Look for dips in the roof, groups of replacement slates or tiles and areas that appear to have been patched several times.
Use the loft during a proper survey
Fresh damp is more useful to look for than an old dry stain. Also check whether any rafters or other roof timbers have been cut or altered.
